The pontoon provided the opportunity to carry out eulerian measurements of the Fal Estuary. The chemical parameters investigated were salinity, temperature, irradiance levels and current velocity. Measurements were recorded every 30 minutes which, when combined with the data taken in the afternoon, produces a time series for the pontoon area over an entire tidal cycle. In addition, the data was compared with similar data sets from transects along the estuary and offshore regions.

To minimise spatial variability, the instruments were deployed at the same time and off the South West edge of the pontoon. Possible changes in local conditions (e.g. disturbances from boats) were recorded in the logbook so that variations in the data could be reliably accounted for.
