Research Vessels:

Below is a list of the research vessels used throughout the field course for the various research undertaken. A brief description and the specification of each of the vessels is given for reference when reading about the scientific procedures undertaken.

RV Callista

A purpose built research catamaran, measuring 19.75m and 50 tonnes. Owned by the University of Southampton, completed in 2005 at a cost of £1 million, RV Callista has a fuel capacity of 6000 litres giving a range of 400 nautical miles, and max speed of 14 knots. Equipped for coastal and shelf field work, Callista contains wet and dry labs, a stern A-frame and winch, and a knuckle boom crane10,11.

RV Bill Conway

An 11.74m purpose built teaching and research vessel, with a range of 150 nautical miles and top speed of 10 knots. Designed for field work in local waters, Bill Conway is equipped with a stern A-frame and winch, and side davit12.



MTS Viking

Vessel of opportunity based out of Falmouth. Ex-Swedish Navy landing craft, of 22.5m length, built in 198813.
