OFFSHORE SURVEY:

Plankton Net Deployment:

The shackle of the plankton net had to be connected to the pulley system of the A-frame before the net. The weight and bottle were then lowered into the surface water and released with the plankton net moved using the attached ropes to the required depth by referencing to the depth meter. Once the required depth is reached, bring up the net using the capstan to the required depth, to ensure the sampling occurs between the pre-determined depths. Weight down was then dropped down the rope to close off the sampling net to stop further sampling occurring when bringing the net back on deck. Once retrieved the net was washed with the hose to ensure all plankton end up in the sampling bottle. The contents of the sampling bottle were then poured into a different bottle for analysis with Formalin added to preserve the contents.
