FALMOUTH FIELDCOURSE

The views expressed are those of the individuals concerned and do not express the views of the University of Southampton or those of the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.

Using the town of Falmouth as their base for two weeks in July of 2017, over 120 students from the University of Southampton investigated the biological, chemical and physical characteristics of the Fal and Herford Special area of Conservation (SAC). The aim, to generate a comprehensive data base and to create the information they collected in a format that can be easily be interpreted. The Fal and Helford region is of interest, due to its conservational status in addition to the past anthropogenic influences.

For example, there is a sewage plant located up the Fal estuary where pollution leaks into the water. This can affect the plankton levels in the water and therefore will influence the oxygen concentration. (Langston at al, 2003).

This website details group 5’s (9 students spread between degrees in Oceanography and Marine Biology) own data from the their uniquely chosen sites. This site also catalogues equipment and the wide variety of methods used to help them in their task.
