Plymouth is an important port city in the Southwest of England and a site of oceanographic and geological significance. The city is surrounded on both sides by the rivers Tamar and Plym, both of which provide riverine inputs into Plymouth sound.

The local geology of the bay bed and surrounding coastlines are defined by alternating layers of mudstone and sandstone, originating in the Early Devonian and altered over a series of deformation events.

All of these influences create a dynamic environment, that provide a wealth of scientific possibilities.
