Meet the team:

The Plymouth Sound is a special area of conservation and an area of outstanding natural beauty. This area on the south coast of the UK consists mostly of sandy sediments and hard rocky substrates.

The estuary is well mixed due to low riverine input in relation to the larger tidal influence, resulting in a changing benthic community structure dominated by distinct communities of algae and invertebrates.

The Sound and the surrounding coastline is a Sight of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to the varied geological, biological and ecological sites within the area.  It is also a Designated Marine Protected Area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
