Title: Ocean Engineering Technician – Sensors & Moorings Group

Location: National Marine Facilites Sea Systems, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

Description: A vacancy has arisen for an Ocean Engineering Technician within National Marine Facilities Sea Systems Division at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team within the Sensors and Moorings Group supporting the NERC Marine Facilities Programme (MFP) through provision of safe, efficient and effective functioning of NMF-SS marine science equipment and support infrastructure, both ashore and at sea. This support will include complex marine instruments, equipment and systems.

Shore duties will include the repair, maintenance and calibration of marine scientific equipment, systems and facilities to meet the requirements of the cruise programme and participation in cruise planning to identify solutions to scientific and engineering needs. Whilst at sea you will participate as a member of the onboard technical support team with responsibility for the operation and maintenance of NMF equipment as required.

You will have a recognised qualification in one of the following; electronic, electrical or mechanical engineering or an oceanography qualification with knowledge of instrumentation. Alternatively the ability to demonstrate a substantial knowledge and experience of oceanographic instrumentation through employment and training is adequate. You will ideally have practical experience in supporting oceanographic instrumentation in a technical capacity. An interest in, and experience of, working on boats is desirable as is an interest in supporting world class oceanography. You must be prepared to travel worldwide.

This is a permanent position on NERC terms and conditions and the salary is in the range of £19,540 to £23,150 per annum. The availability for sea time of approximately 90 days per year is required for this role, which attracts a daily allowance. Additional allowances may be available to exceptional candidates.

Description: A vacancy has arisen in National Marine Facilities – Sea Systems who are responsible for the operation and management of two NERC owned vessels in providing wider support in the co-ordination and management of the NERC Marine Facility Science programme. Scientific Research Vessels provide the scientific platform to support the UK’s world-wide oceanographic research programme.

For this position it is essential that you have the following certificates: AB Certificate of Competency, Navigational Watch Rating Certificate, ENG1 (medical), STCW95 Personal Survival Techniques, Elementary First Aid, Fire fighting and prevention.

Title: Director of the International CLIVAR Project Office (ICPO) - Secondment opportunity

Location: National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

Description: An exciting opportunity has arisen for a secondment with the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the UK’s National Oceanography Centre (NOC) for the position of Director of the International CLIVAR Project Office (ICPO), located at NOC Southampton headquarters. The secondment period will be until 31 March 2014.

The Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) project is one of four core projects of the WCRP. CLIVAR coordinates and facilitates national and international activities that contribute to our understanding and prediction of climate variability and change on seasonal, decadal and centennial timescales.

You will take a leading role in the implementation and coordination of CLIVAR activities under the general guidance of the CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group. Having lead responsibility for CLIVAR, you will direct the implementation of the plans and activities of each of the project elements of CLIVAR in support of the overall mission and strategy of WCRP.

You will maintain active links between CLIVAR and the wider science community that requires inspiring and organizing scientific meetings, workshops and conferences to ensure the timely flow of information on CLIVAR. You will have direct management of the Project Office staff, budgets, and operations. You will also undertake work in maintaining and developing its funding base.

The role would be an excellent opportunity for those wanting to increase their knowledge of the working in climate-science and develop a career in senior management.

You will have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field. A proven ability in science management including obtaining external funding is essential. You should have demonstrated the ability to organize, manage and coordinate interdisciplinary and international science activities and initiate and sustain international cooperation.

This post will be funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and graded to a NERC Band 3 with a salary range of £47,630 to £60,420 per annum. An agreement would be entered with the successful applicant’s current employer concerning specific terms for the secondment.

Alternative locations may be considered for the Director but there would need to be frequent travel to Southampton to be part of the team. The role will include periods of travel both within the UK and internationally.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for the right candidate to make a move away from mainstream seagoing and to make a real contribution to understanding our planet.

It is essential that applicants have the following certificates: STCW95 Personal Survival Techniques; Medical First Aid Certificate; Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention, ENG 1 Medical Certificate and Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats. In addition the following certificates would be desirable for this particular role: GMDSS Maintenance Certificate, Radar Maintenance Certificate and Electronic Navigation Equipment Maintenance Certificate. You must also have previous seagoing experience.

This is a permanent position and the salary is on a marine scale in the range of £36,979 to £45,855 per annum. Tours of duty are normally in the order of 2 to 3 months. Benefits include RCUK pension scheme and 25 days leave is accrued per month served.
