The Oceanographer in Residence Programme

Role of the Oceanographer-in-Residence

Oceanographers in Residence support the on-ship marine program of research, teaching and outreach. Selected oceanographers will join The Scholar Ship for individual legs (approximately 5 to 12 days) of its journey in order to enrich the research and learning environment with their professional expertise and personal life experience.

Responsibilities

Aboard the ship, Oceanographers in Residence will:

  1. Take primary responsibility for conducting the oceanography and atmospheric research program, including initial data formatting. A typical complement of instrumentation and deployables will include the UK NOC Ferrybox, the UK Meteorological Office meteorological package, SAHFOS plankton indicators, XBTs, Argo floats, surface drifters, aerosol samplers and cetacea survey.

  2. Support the program of oceanography outreach by actively engaging students in the research program (including deployments and data analysis) and by assisting with the outreach website updates (including updating observations and responding to questions).

  3. Deliver onboard guest seminars to undergraduate and postgraduate classes.

  4. Meet with student groups and individual students interested in related oceanography careers.

  5. Participate in onboard life as a cultural ambassador.

  6. Join Academic Teaching Staff and students for meals.

Qualifications and experience

Oceanographers must have several years of professional experience, including significant participation in conducting oceanography measurements on dedicated cruise vessels. This includes familiarity with standard instruments and techniques and knowledge of basic safety guidelines for ship-based oceanography research. Participation in educational programs and/or experience teaching at university level is preferred.
