ChAAOS: Change in the Atlantic in the Atmosphere-Ocean System
PI: Myles Allen, University of Oxford.
ChAAOS will make use of the huge computing resources of the climateprediction.net initiative to adjust, many hundreds of thousands of times, two fully coupled ocean-atmosphere climate models and identify versions that best reproduce the historical state of the ocean-climate system. The best-performing versions will then be re-run with a variety of natural and anthropogenic environmental conditions imposed, to establish the behaviour of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) under different conditions.
By investigating the range of overturning behaviour in each experiment, and comparing these with estimates of the AMOC calculated from observations and re-analyses, we will increase our understanding of the drivers of recent change, and thus of future risk.
