Palaeoceanography and Palaeoclimate Group
Research Topics
The research activities of the Palaeo Group concern timescales of change from interannual through millenial to millions of years. We study diverse periods in earth history ranging from the Holocene and Pleistocene through the early and mid Cenozoic, the Cretaceous to the Devonian. Research programmes are undertaken world-wide with current activities from the North Atlantic and Arctic through the Mediterranean to the Southern Ocean and from the Equatorial Pacific to the margins of western North America. The following topics provide a guide to current research:- Quaternary sea-level changes
- Interannual to decadal ocean/ climate variability
- Extreme Climates
- Changes in the East Greenland Current and Deep Western Boundary Current
- Cenozoic "Pacific Equatorial Age Transect "
- "Arctic Coring Expedition" (IODP)
- Palaeogene climate change in high northern latitudes: DSDP, ODP and IODP projects
- Population dynamics and ecology and calcite budget of the modern and fossil calcareous plankton
- The role of diatoms in global biogeochemical cycles
