Ocean Observing and Climate Research Group

The oceans are an important part of the Earth's climate system. The climate is changing rapidly, partly as a result of our interference with it. The Ocean Circulation and Climate research group is looking at the role of the ocean in changing climate.

We undertake research into the climate by making and analysing observations. Modelling of the climate is carried out by the Ocean Modelling and Forecasting group, with whom we have close links. Our observations come from research cruises, from moored and floating buoys, from merchant ships and from satellites. One of our strengths is the integration of these different measurement systems. Notable research areas include

Our interests are global but we have special interests in the Atlantic and Southern Ocean.
