The Centre is housed in a £50 million purpose-built waterfront campus development at Empress Dock. The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funds core research programmes and underpins the infrastructure at NOCS to enable the delivery of NERC's strategic mission. HEFCE funding enables the University of Southampton to deliver its remit of research and teaching. NOCS scientists and engineers also win funding from the Research Council's thematic and non-thematic programmes and from the EU's Framework programmes. They undertake commissioned research comprising collaborative projects, technology development and consultancy contracts for a range of public and private sector customers and derive income from licensing and other knowledge transfer agreements. These collaborations enhance the core research and education activities, demonstrate their relevance and help to extend our international presence.

In 2005/6 the Centre had a turnover of £35 million. Details of expenditure are contained in the annual reports of NERC, the University and NOCS - these reports are available to download from our literature page. A breakdown of income and expenditure for the 2003-2004 financial year is given below.
