Marine Facilities Planning

The purpose of these Marine Facilities Planning web pages is to allow scientists to make applications for marine facilities in support of marine science.

Scientists who have secured science funding from NERC, or from a non-NERC peer-reviewed source (eg. the EU or NSF) or from commissioned research, can bid to NERC for 'free at the point of use' access to: NERC ships, the National Marine Equipment Pool (NMEP), NMF-SS technical staff and equipment support facilities.

There are currently two types of applications:

  • The Ship-time and Equipment application form (SME Profile).
  • The Marine Equipment only application form (ME Profile).

Before applying for marine facilities you must have made an application for research and 'superstructure' (ie. the cost of all technician and equipment support) funding. Funding applications cannot be made via the Marine Facilities Planning web site but must have previously been made elsewhere - [here].

Please also check the NERC deadlines - [here].

Access to the Marine Facilities Planning web pages is provided by the menus on the left side navigation bar.

Public access to the site provides :

  • Information about the Marine Facilities Planning process.
Select an option from the 'Help Menu'.

  • A read only review of specific Cruise Profiles.
A Profile is a collection of online forms which are used in the Application, Planning and Post-Cruise Assessment of a research cruise.
Specific Profiles can be selected on the 'Listing and Sorting Profiles Page'.
Go to the 'Listing and Sorting Profiles Page' by selecting a Profile list option from the 'View Profiles Menu' on the left.

  • The Programme of cruises by specific years. Please view the current Programme - [here].
Or select the required Programme year from the options in the 'View Profiles Menu'.

  • A summary of recent applications - [here].

To make an application for marine facilities - you must be a registered user of the Marine Facilities Planning tool.

Registered access (after logging in) to the site allows :

  • The Principal Investigator to create and manage their application Profiles.
Information on obtaining an account and password - [here].
