Title: Software Engineer

Location: Ocean Observing and Climate Group, Science and Technology Directorate, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

Description: The National Oceanography Centre is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world.

With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK’s leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development. Working closely with its partners and associates it provides capability to meet the needs across the UK marine science community.

Satellite Radar Altimetry is the most successful technique for the observation of open-ocean dynamics and has revolutionized our understanding of how oceans affect climate. The new frontier of this technique is the coastal zone, where traditional measurements are hampered by a number of technical problems. Improved reprocessing techniques, known as coastal altimetry, are needed to recover the information present in nearly 20 years of data collected by past and present altimetric missions in this crucial region. NOC is at the forefront of coastal altimetry research and development, and lead the COASTALT project http://www.coastalt.eu funded by the European Space Agency for the development of coastal altimetry for the Envisat mission.

A position for a Software Engineer is now available to work on the main coastal altimetry software processor for the COASTALT project. The work consists of maintaining and testing the processor on the NOC UNIX system, improving the usability of the software, implementing additional corrections and waveform fitting schemes, and implementing the processing of additional variables. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of FORTRAN and C++ programming techniques and of the UNIX/Linux environments. A working knowledge of optimization techniques and an understanding of the basic principles of radar remote sensing are a bonus. Good technical writing skills are desirable to provide input to the processor technical documentation.

The post is initially until 31 March 2011 on a 1.5 day/week part-time basis (11.2 hours) but it may be extended depending on funding availability. The salary is in the range of £7,924.75 to £8,902.49 per annum (pro rata to £26,180 to £29,410 per annum)
