Marine Geology Special Issues in the pipeline
Many of the EUROSTRATAFORM project results are to be published in two special editions of the journal Marine Geology. The first issue, to be published sometime during late summer 2005, will contain a braod range of papers relating to many different aspects of EUROSTRATAFORM research. The second, to be published later in the year, will focus on submarine canyons research. The EUROSTRATAFORM project has generated a wealth of new data and information about Europe's continental margin.

ComDelta attracts EUROSTRATAFORM researchers
Many partners from the EUROSTRATAFORM project attended and contributed to the ComDelta meeting at the CEREGE institute in Aix en Provence in October 2003. This open conference on Comparing Mediterranean and Black Sea prodeltas was arranged as part of the EU-funded Eurodelta programme, and co-sponsored by the USA's Office of Naval Research (sponsors of the NA EuroStrataform Programme) and the OMARC consortium. The meeting attracted many scientists including a significant number from North America.
EUROSTRATAFORM partners working in the Gulf of Lions area held a dedicated meeting during the ComDelta conference to discuss progress of work in this area and to co-ordinate future research activities.

EUROSTRATAFORM scientists gather at OMARC conference
A large number of EUROSTRATAFORM scientists travelled to Paris earlier this month to attend the EU and UNESCO sponsored Ocean Margins Research Conference. Many of our partners contributed poster presentations in various sessions. This meeting was highly successful in putting EUROSTRATAFORM research into the context of other research efforts currently ongoing around Europe and in the USA, and presented the opportunity for EUROSTRATAFORM partners to discuss their work with scientists involved in other research programmes such as PROMESS1, EURODELTA, COSTA, and Hydratec. The OMARC conference was followed by the first EUROSTRATAFORM Annual Meeting, hosted at the IFREMER headquarters in Issy, just outside central Paris.

Norwegian margin planning meeting
On June the 11th representatives from the Norwegian EUROSTRATAFORM partners responsible for the Norwegian margin activities meet for a planning meeting in Bergen. At the meeting were Jan Sverre Laberg, University of Tromsø and Haflidi Haflidason, University of Bergen. Topics that were discussed included an update of the project activities and results, and future cooperative work within the project. The results from the first successful test cruise of the new Norwegian Research vessel G.O. Sars (left) were also presented.

Teachers to join EUROSTRATAFORM cruise
Hampshire (UK) science teachers Ian Lewis (Wyvern Technology College) and Elena Fernandez-Lee (Arnewood School) beat off strong competition from other science and geography teachers to win places aboard a EUROSTRATAFORM cruise to the Portuguese Margin next year. Ian and Elena will be particpating in a project called Classroom@Sea, jointly sponsored by EUROSTRATAFORM and NERC, which aims to bring real marine science into classrooms. For more details about the project, visit the Classroom@Sea website.

EUROSTRATAFORM sponsors science posters for schools
EUROSTRATAFORM has co-sponsored a series of ocean and earth science posters aimed at UK school children. The posters were designed by postgraduate students at Southampton Oceanography Centre, with the help of local school pupils. The posters address various aspects of natural processes: their driving forces, how they work, the effects they have on humankind, and how they can be disrupted by mans activities. The posters have been professionally printed and are now available free of charge to UK schools. To find out more about the posters visit www.soc.soton.ac.uk/CHD/education/posters.

Classroom@Sea project launched
25/03/03
| EUROSTRATAFORM project co-ordinators at SOC are ready to launch their Classroom@Sea project, which aims to bring marine geoscience into classrooms across the UK. Classroom@Sea kicks off at the beginning of April with a competition for 1 or 2 school teachers to win a place on board a EUROSTRATAFORM cruise on the Portuguese Margin early next year. The teachers will send stories, reports, photographs and video clips from RRS Discovery back to SOC, where they will be posted on a dedicated, interactive website accessible to schools across the UK. To find out more, visit the Classroom@Sea website.

Portuguese scientists monitor oil spill
26/01/03
The Prestige oil spill disaster is benefiting from Iberian EUROSTRATAFORM modelers' expertise. In Portugal, the team co-ordinated by Ramiro Neves at Instituto Superior Tecnico, and the team co-ordinated by Joao Vitorino at Instituto Hidrografico, have recently been involved in monitoring the distribution of the heavy fuel oil in the Galicia region off the Spanish coast. The MOHID Water Modelling System has been used by IST partners in collaboration with MeteoGalicia to forecast the oil slick trajectory from the time of the accident.
More information on the MOHID system, the Prestige accident and access to the oil dispersal simulations can be found at http://www.mohid.com.
