Coastal Processes Research Group

The role of the Coastal Processes Group is to enhance our understanding of the character and evolution of the coastal zone through multi-disciplinary scientific research. It deals with key coastal issues both nationally and internationally, and members of the group have close links with Government organisations, NGOs, coastal managers, engineers and UK industry.

Fundamental processes are investigated through coordinated field and laboratory experimentation linked to numerical prediction. Key research includes:

  • Mechanisms of sediment transport and behaviour for cohesive and non-cohesive sediments in the coastal zone
  • Stability and evolution of salt marshes, intertidal mudflats and beaches
  • Behaviour of offshore sandbanks
  • Investigations into the structure and nature of benthic boundary layers under coastal waves and currents, and the transfer of energy and matter through this boundary
  • Such studies help provide clear, accurate and concise information and advice on coastal management issues, and in the training of coastal scientists

The Group is also strongly linked to the University's Centre of Coastal, Processes, Engineering and Management
