Mark 78H-21
PARFLUX Sediment Trap

The PARFLUX Mark 78H-21 is a time-series sediment trap for the collection of settling particles in oceans and lakes. The sediment trap can be deployed for a short time period such as days or weeks, or continuously for up to 18 months. Sample capacity of the Mark 78H-21 is 21 events, to enable a high resolution of particle flux variability over time without hiatus.

For minimum sample contamination, the interior layer of the cone and the sample bottles are made from virgin polyethylene. Each sample bottle is securely sealed from ambient water before and after the collection period. The Mark 78H-21 frame is a rugged, non-contaminating, long lasting titanium weldment. A trap can be easily handled by two people and is designed to withstand deployment in high seas. It can be deployed with a stand-alone mooring or as a large high-tension array to depths of 6,500 meters. Optional sensors such as compass/tilt, pressure, and temperature are also available.

The menu-driven, user friendly operating software is designed for maximum programming flexibility. An external computer can access the internal computer via serial communications (RS-232 port). The sediment trap computer saves the self diagnostic report of the electronics before and after each event for a deployment operation history. The sediment trap can be activated by external sensors such as transmissometers, current meters or hot linked to other McLane systems.

PARFLUX Mark 78HW-13
Sediment Trap

In extremely high productive environments, the apex of the cone on the Mark 78H-21 might clog with sediment or a sample bottle might over fill. The Mark 78HW-13 was designed to measure these large particle fluxes accurately. The Mark 78HW-13 hydrodynamics profile is almost identical to the Mark 78H-21. However, its lower opening area is close to three times larger than the Mark 78H-21.

There are thirteen 500 ml sample bottles on the Mark 78HW-13 instead of twenty-one 250 ml bottles on the Mark 78H-21. For smooth downward transport of particles, all McLane sediment trap interior cone walls are coated with virgin ployethylene and slope evenly at a 41 included angle. Operation of the Mark 78H-13 is the same as the Mark 78H-21 and both are protected by a rugged titanium frame.
