In April 2008 the ANIMATE network Observatories became part of the EuroSITES European Ocean Observatory Network.
Data shown here and subsequent data are available through the EuroSITES website www.eurosites.info
The ANIMATE site will not be updated further.

The objective of the project is to merge, unify and enhance the existing European infrastructure for carbon cycle related repeat/sustained observations in the eastern North Atlantic.

The observations that the system should be able to support and provide then are

1. timeseries of near-surface partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), which can resolve the diurnal, synoptic, seasonal, and interannual fluctuations driven by physical and biological processes.

2. timeseries of physical mixed-layer properties and evolution

3. timeseries of quantities related to primary production (a CO2 sink) in the mixed layer, specifically fluorescence and nutrients

4. measurements of the variability of the downward particulate carbon flux, including the variability of the relative sinking flux of organic carbon and CaCO3.

Our work package (WP) structure is organized according to the above 4 points plus the telemetry as a 5th work package (there are additional ones for data handling, dissemination, etc. see below). This approach emphasizes and assures the synergy and collaboration between the partners: single partners are responsible for deploying and/or servicing the 3 moorings, but many partners contribute elements for each mooring. Accordingly, the work package structure is as follows:

CO2 measurements (SAMIs)
Mixed-layer measurements (ADCPs, microcats)
Primary production related measurements (fluorescence, nutrients)
Downward particle flux measurements (sediment traps)
Real-time data telemetry
Mooring operations and station work
Data management
Integration with users and research programs
