Global Wind and Wave Climates from Altimeter Data

Gridding Scheme

The altimeter wind and wave data processing scheme employed at JRC creates monthly means in 2 x 2 degree lat/long squares. Data for the selected month are extracted, and subjected to quality tests. The median for each transect of the satellite over each square is calculated, provided there are at least eight 1 second wave height (or wind speed) values. If there are five or more transects within the month, the average of the medians is taken to give the monthly average. See the CEO Altimeter Demonstrator for other information on altimeter data.
