This is a new buoy design, supported by SOC's Technology Innovation Fund, tackling the need to release multiple drifters at a location to look at the time variation in their trajectories. The design involves mooring the instrument on the ocean bottom, and using a timed release.
The above picture shows the equipment in the early stages of construction at SOC.
Once released, the buoys will transmit their location via ARGOS, and this information will be displayed in near real-time at SOC.
