Process modelling

The process modelling team

Ocean models attempt to simulate the ocean by solving a set of mathematical equations that approximate the fluid flow. Some processes cannot be resolved by these equations and need to be parameterised. The accuracy of ocean models is dependent on how well the appproximations describe the resolved processes and how well the unresolved processes are parameterised. To assess this we need to understand and be able to quantify the different processes.

The objective of the process modelling team is to study physical processes in the ocean and their representation in ocean models. To do this we develop mathematical models of physical processes, analyse output from large scale ocean models such as OCCAM and AIM, and even go out and make observations.
