• sponsorship of a focussed workshop under the auspices of the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR), held outside the UK and
  
• a workshop co-organised with the International Polar Year secretariat, to enable a coherent approach to managing the call by the international community for the use of autonomous underwater vehicles within IPY (2007-2008).
